News 2024 - The Choir of Selwyn College directed by Sarah MacDonald is recording this work in Selwyn College Chapel in June. The recording will be released on the Regent Label.
Seven Last Words from the Cross is an attempt to write a modern alternative to Stainer's masterpiece The Crucifixion. Like the Stainer it is scored for two soloists, choir and organ, has one unaccompanied movement, and includes hymns for everyone to sing.
The narrator’s part has not been given to a man but to that fascinating disciple, Mary Magdalene - Mary from Magdala.
The work is intended to be performed in Lent, Passiontide or Holy Week, but not exclusively. The first performance was actually in July and commemorated the feast of St Mary Magdalene.
