The Recordings
All the recordings on these CDs are 'Live' i.e. given at recitals. The earliest recordings heard in this collection were made using one of the most primitive methods of recording sound, the 78 r.p.m. disc, and go right through to modern digital sound. The two examples of 78 r.p.m. discs are found on CD 2 tracks 10 and 11. In the case of track 10, this recording was made by the B.B.C. as part of a number of test recordings they made of the organ and choir of York Minster during 1947 and 1948. These were recorded on 13 inch acetate B.B.C. transcription discs, revolving at 78 r.p.m. The other 78 r.p.m. recording on track 11 was recorded and issued commercially in 1951 on the Eborcaum label recorded by Cyril Dalby, Radio Relay of York. It was recorded first on spool tape and then transferred to 78 r.p.m. record for sale to the public. It formed part of a series of records that featured the organ and choir at York. It dates from the time when the L.P. was first starting to make an impact in this country. By 1955 the 78 r.p.m. record was more or less a thing of the past, as the vinyl 45 and 331/3 r.p.m. records were replacing it in common use.
The rest of the recordings are made on tape, analogue or digital, spool or cassette. The earliest example of analogue spool tape heard here is track 4 CD 2, an off-air recording from B.B.C. A.M. radio. The year this recording was made, 1955, the B.B.C. started to introduce F.M. or V.H.F. radio transmissions in the southeast of the country which later that year spread to the rest of the nation.
Tracks 5 to 8 CD 2 are examples of how the analogue cassette tape introduced in the 1960s had advanced, and for domestic use it was now equal in quality to that of the domestic spool tape recorder. Track 15, CD 2, is the only track not from York, and has been included because of the high standard of performance. All other tracks are recorded digitally, in this instance using Digital Audio Tape, D.A.T.
