Contra Plagam
John Hearne
Intercession against the plague for Trumpet Solo, Organ and Bass Drum (Original version scored for for SATB and Piano)
Text by Sedulius Scottus
The SATB version notes: Sedulius Scottus was an Irish-born scholar and poet who flourished in the 9th century. This poem is an impassioned plea for deliverance from the plague. In this setting for chorus and piano the voices alternate between desparate cries and yearning prayers, while the piano gives out various clangorous alarums interspersed with gentle calming assurances. The melody used in the final stanza is based on a 15th century Hussite chorale.
The Instrumental version notes: In 2020 I made a new version, without text and was perfomed at a lunmchtime concert by Alan Haggart and Roger Bevan Williams, scored for Trumpet, Organ and Bass Drum.
Purchase includes all instrumental parts.
