Written in 1844 in thanksgiving for the preservation of the life of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm after an unsuccessful assassination attempt, this is the original a cappella version of the well-known chorus from Elijah. This edition presents both English and German texts.

Reviews:

"William Bartholomew's English translation appears above Martin Luther's German words in this edition and this will please many an English-speaking choir. This is a beautiful intoit-sized gem, whose words from Psalm 91 make the piece generally useful, and particularly so for weddings." - Jeremy Summerly, Choir & Organ, November 2015

"We may all know Mendelssohn's ever-popular chorus from Elijah, but not that 'For he shall give his angels charge over thee' derives from an eight-part unaccompanied motet that the composer wrote two years before Elijah. Patrick Russill has fitted Bartholomew's English text to Mendelssohn's original music, and added some editorial markings and corrections to make an effective English-language anthem." - James L. Montgomery, Sunday by Sunday (RSCM)
