An Old Yorkshire Carol
This carol has its origins in the nineteenth century, appearing in a collection published in Leeds in 1900, although even then it was attributed with the composers unknown. It remained popular especially in the area around the South Yorkshire Pennines, and in parts of Nottinghamshire the tune is used with the words "O'er earthly plains those golden chimes of Christmas ring today", and in the Salvation Army Christmas Praise is sung to the words "The bells ring out at Christmas time". There are several variations found within the West Riding of Yorkshire, but again there is no source and no date.
