New Critical Edition by John Scott Whiteley
The opportunity for a new critical edition of Sir Edward Bairstow’s anthem Blessed City, Heavenly Salem (1914) has arisen for several reasons. The first has been the discovery of Bairstow’s orchestration of the accompaniment for strings, piano and violin solo. This is extant in the archive of Banks Music Publications. The further imperative has concerned the archive of the editor, which contains notes that were kept on the performances that took place at York between 1975 and 1982. These were made from information imparted directly from Dr Francis Jackson, whose knowledge of performance details came directly from Bairstow himself. The final reason concerns the need for a corrected score with the pedal of the organ part and the treble solo laid out on separate staves. Ambiguities and misprints in the 1914 edition have also been corrected using the guidance of the orchestration; details of any correction are always listed in the critical notes.
