Kishmul's Galley
John Hearne
A Gaelic waulking song
SATB choruses and optional children choir (Unacc')
"Based on the version found in the collection made in the 1920's by Marjorie Kennedy-Fraser which became very popular. I was always fascinated by the sweeping melodies back in my teenage years but always felt there was much more drama to be found in Kishmul's Galley; so when the National Youth Choir of GB commissioned me for a big a cappella number for their 25th Anniversary and the entire chorus of 500 members I used the opportunity to take this song and turn it into a choral tone-poem. The main chorus of upper voices sing in English but the lower voices and optional children's chorus use the sounds of a Gaelic refrain. The full version was first performed and recorded in Birmingham City Hall." JH
