Spirituals continue to be popular with choirs and their audiences, but more often than not they are of the "tried and tested" category. Thus we hear: Joshua fit the battle of Jericho, Deep River, Nobody knows the trouble I see, Swing low sweet chariot, Steal Away, Down by the riverside, Ride the chariot, Amazing Grace and a few more. However, there are literally thousands of spirituals (over 6000 in fact) and a great many of them deserve to be much better known than they are.
When the love comes trickalin' down is a particularly deserving example. The tune is memorable, the style infectiously rhythmic and some of the words very familiar to most of us. They come from the Gospel according to St Matthew (ch.7, v.7), and are identical to those found in Luke (ch.11, v.9). "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you".
